Festival Pub ready for Ludlow drinkers

Shropshire's Wood Beer

With a line up of 140 beers from 50 brewers across the region, Ludlow’s Festival Pub is the place to head for tonight, as the Society of Independent Brewers (SIBA) opens this year’s Spring Festival with its popular ‘Meet the Brewer’ evening. The Festival Pub marquee, located opposite the main entrance to Ludlow Festival, will be open from 5.00 on Friday, offering visitors the chance to taste the range of deliciously flavoured beers from crisp, golden ales to rich, chocolatey stouts.

At various points in the evening, brewers from Hobsons, Corvedale, Breconshire, Wye Valley and Ludlow breweries will be talking about their craft and offering guided tastings of their favourite brews. “Spending Friday night in the pub is a great British tradition, though most pubs don’t offer 140 beers at once,” said Jim Kenyon, SIBA West & Wales chairman. “We’re expecting the Festival Pub to be very popular. On the day after the General Election, people will be either celebrating the result – or wanting to forget about it for a few hours!” Earlier today, the Festival Pub was the venue for SIBA’s Beer Competition, West & Wales region. All 140 beers will be tasted by the judges, and Gold, Silver and Bronze winners announced in seven categories. The Gold winners go through to the National Competition, held early next year.

Election crunch time with leaders’ crisps from Tyrrells

Tyrrells political crisps - putting good taste back into Parliament

Crisp manufacturer Tyrells has launched a limited edition range of party political potato crisp flavours to mark today’s General Election, after more than 2,000 people from across the country voted on which flavours and tastes they would associate with the UK’s main political parties. The results of the poll have now inspired the ingredients for a new election snack range, using Lady Claire potatoes for the chips.
Cameron Crunchies (Eton Mess, strawberries, meringue and cream ); Gourmet Gordons (Scotch Egg and Brown Sauce) and Clegg’s Cocktail (Hummous and Roasted Vegetables) are on sale at Selfridges London and from www.tyrrellspotatochips.co.uk.
The findings of the national vote revealed that the most popular flavours associated with the Conservatives had distinct sweet and smooth notes, with over a quarter of respondents naming Eton Mess (25.10%) as the flavour that would best represent the party, followed by Pheasant, Stilton and Chutney.
In the red corner 40% of those surveyed named Scotch Egg and Brown Sauce as the flavours that define Labour Party narrowly beating northern stew Hotpot.  Bitter Beer and Bubble and Squeak were also ranked highly – flavour combinations rooted in the party’s working class history that still resonate with today’s voters.
Nearly half of voters (48.9%) named Hummous and Roasted Vegetables as the key flavours of the Liberal Democrat palette.

The Tyrrells election results in full:

Conservatives:
Eton Mess (25.10%)
Pheasant (24.5%)
Stilton and Chutney (22.35%)
Cucumber Sandwich (16.65%)

Labour:
Scotch Egg and Brown Sauce (40%)
Hotpot (38.5%)
Bitter (13%)
Bubble & Squeak (8.5%)

Liberal:
Hummous and Roasted Vegetables (48.9%)
Coriander (21.55%)
Lentils (19.85%)
Elderflower (9.7%)

With many of the nation’s voters still undecided, chefs at Tyrrells have been working round the clock to add a Hung Parliament flavour to the range. The unique recipe is a challenging fusion of hotpot, pheasant and lentils.

Ludlow Food Spring Festival

Sausage making demo with Sady Boyd of Ludlow Centre at the 2009 Food Festival

Ludlow’s Spring Festival 2010 – previously known as the Spring Event – takes place for the second year in the grounds of the historic Ludlow Castle, in Shropshire, England. This year, we’re also having a Friday evening “Meet the Brewer” preview.

With 130 real ales on draught from small breweries in Wales and the Marches, brought to Ludlow with help of SIBA, the Society of Independent Brewers, plus other drinks, seriously good local sausages and bread, and more, you will find a great, fun atmosphere, suitable for all ages!

The well-established Marches Transport Festival, a display of classic cars and other vehicles, also takes place in and around the Castle on the Sunday – so there is a double attraction on that day.
